Players of the Week – Week 1 Edition

Players of the Week – Spring 2017 Week 1

By Sean Dochney

Joe Giuffre – Shockers

The Shockers didn’t skip a beat with the layoff from the fall season, as the reigning champs demolished Strangers with Candy 50-8.  No surprise that the Guffslinger is the QB of the week as he completed 75% of his passes for a league best 437 yards and 7 TDs.  He wasn’t perfect on the day as he did throw an interception, but that interception didn’t matter as the Shockers still were able to put the boots to Strangers with Candy.  Giuffre will look to have another big week next week as the Shockers will take on newcomers the Money Team in Week 2.

Runner Up

John Zitani – Woodchucks

The Zit proved again why he is the face of the JSGFFL.  Zitani is the son the commissioner’s parents wished they had.  He always handles himself with class, dignity, and perseverance on the field, and he did so again Week 1 against the Clam Slammers.  Rumors have been swirling about this being the Zit’s final season in the JSGFFL, and if this is true, the JSGFFL should retire the Zit’s number 18 around the entire league.  The Zit completed over 72% of his passes for 336 yards and 6 TDs with no interceptions in the 33-18 victory over the Clam Slammers.  Woodchucks will look to stay hot as they take on Strangers with Candy in Week 2.

Sean McAndrew – Warewolves

Seany Mac put up a monster game as the Warewolves took down the Rabid Squirrels.  The Rabid Squirrels had no answer for McAndrew as he continually torched the Squirrels defense on the way to a 33-18 win.  The Birdman Hauled in 8 catches for 146 yards and 3 TDs.  Sean looks like a great fantasy option in Week 2 as the Warewolves take on the Red Jaguars.

Runner Up

Charlie Barbiere – Shockers

Strangers with Candy had no answer for Barbiere as he made big play after big play for the Shockers.  Charlie is always a solid fantasy option as he and Giuffre have been putting up big numbers together for years in the JSGFFL.  In Week 1, he had 6 receptions for 147 yards and 3 TDs.  One would expect him to have another big game next week as the Shockers will take on one of the inexperienced teams in the Money Team in Week 2.  He will be a good pick for the weekly fantasy contest in Week 2.

Guy Blessing – The Money Team

The man with the best name in the league proved to have the best defensive game in the league in Week 1.  Blessing blessed the Money Team with a great pass rush in route to recording 3 sacks in the 34-20 victory against the Red Jaguars.  The Red Jaguars seemed to never get anything going on offense because of the ineffectiveness to stop the pass rush.  Guy will look to remain on top of the sack leaderboards as the Money Team will take on the defending champion Shockers in Week 2.

Runner Up

Devon McEllen – Woodchucks

Devon has big cleats to fill as he steps into a more prominent leadership role on the Woodchucks defense after the retirement of their spiritual leader, Garrett “Loud Mouth” Lavaggi.  Devon was not phased at all by the added pressure as he was able to constantly make big plays on defense by coming up with huge flag pulls and regularly swatting away pass attempts.  He was the epitome of a shutdown corner last week and even picked up a pivotal and momentum changing interception in the early stages of the game.  It was all Woodchucks after the McEllen interception in the 36-12 victory over the Clam Slammers.  Devon will look to continue his shutdown ways as the Woodchucks take on the talented receiving corps of Strangers with Candy in Week 2.
